File Transfer Security
With the ever-increasing risk of being "infected" by a
computer virus, we have recently upgraded our systems in Newbury to provide
additional protection. As part of our ongoing commitment to customers
and contacts, we are doing everything reasonable to prevent the onward
transmission of infected files or data. There is, however, a balancing
act between locking the system up so tightly that no-one can communicate
with us, and taking reasonable care.
All incoming files are scanned, however we have recently encountered problems
with password protected zipped files.
As the system is unable to open the file it now quarantines it for safety,
leaving us with your e-mail, but no access to the attached data!
To avoid this happening it is imperative not
to password protect the zip file. Instead, the individual files
can be password protected, and then the files zipped, thus allowing the
data through the virus protection barrier.
If you are running Magics Communicator Pro, then it is straightforward
to password protect the .stl when saved. We are currently investigating
other options that will offer an increased level of security and work
with a heightened virus protection. Results will be posted on this page
as soon as they are available.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused, but trust that our stringent
measures will reinforce our commitment to providing a high level of customer
service in all areas.

* The .STL file format has become the standard data transmission method for the Rapid Prototyping industry, and is the preferred format required to build SLS parts. To find out how to generate a good .STL file, click here.
** While we can read these file formats, they are only 2D and hence do not include sufficient information to drive the modelling process. 2D-3D conversion is required.

It is important that your data files
are compacted to allow them to be successfully e-mailed and quickly
downloaded through our server. Files should be zipped before sending - various compression software packages are available. Alternatively, you can upload your files to our FTP site - please telephone us to obtain instructions to do this.
